About

The pilots of the flight team possess an in-depth knowledge of this vast country and will highlight various sights during your journey, as the landscape gradually transforms through the foothills of the Alaska Range. Each passenger is provided with a headset, allowing for conversation with the pilot throughout the flight. Denali's immense size makes it seem distant until you soar past the foothills and ascend the Tokositna Glacier. To your left, you'll spot Little Switzerland, a favored spot for both technical climbing adventures and enjoyable day trips. Next, you will ascend over the Tokositna Glacier as it meanders toward Denali, flying within six miles of the towering summit. Known affectionately as the 'Tok', this relatively small glacier on the southern route to Denali offers passengers a remarkable perspective on how the stunning landscape of the Alaska Range has shaped ancient glaciers. After navigating through the 747 pass, you will veer towards the head of the Ruth Glacier and touch down at the Ruth West landing strip. While flying at the head of the Ruth Glacier, you will be awestruck by the Don Sheldon Amphitheatre, a name bestowed by the National Geographic Society at the recommendation of Bradford Washburn. You will see sight of Mooses Tooth, Bear Tooth, and Broken Tooth peaks, which are popular climbing spots located on the far side of the amphitheater. The Mountain House, constructed in 1966 by Sheldon as a refuge for climbers and a private getaway, remains a sought-after overnight destination. Reservations for the Mountain House can be made up to two years in advance, but you can land and visit the site on any flight, at any time of the year. To cap off your adventure, you will glide through the breathtaking Ruth Gorge on your return to Talkeetna. Sometimes referred to as the Great Gorge, it plunges a mile deep in certain areas, with the rugged Ruth Glacier forming its floor. Keep an eye out for the stunning pools of bright-blue glacier meltwater. Arriving at the breathtaking Ruth Amphitheatre, encircled by towering peaks, provides flightseers with a chance to appreciate the grandeur of the landscape and capture stunning photographs of the mountain range. Landing on the glacier is the the pinnacle of any flightseeing adventure. During the return journey, the Tokositna River region at the foot of the Alaska Range presents yet another chance to observe moose and bears in their wild environment.

About

The highlight of our Base Camp Tour is an up-close view of Mount Hunter, the Kahiltna Glacier (the largest glacier in Denali), and the Kahiltna "Base Camp," where most climbers of Mt. McKinley commence their adventure, situated at an elevation of 7,200 feet. Our well-loved Base Camp flightseeing air tour provides passengers with a fantastic view of both the base camp and the vast Kahiltna Glacier. This journey also encompasses all the key features of the Don Sheldon Mountain House Tour. You will take off from Talkeetna and witness the expansive river and forest landscapes during the flight to the Kahiltna Glacier. These river and forest areas are inhabited by Alaska's wildlife, including black bears and moose. Additionally, you may spot the occasional lodge along the shores of the lakes, which are often only reachable by float plane. Along the way, the route leads you past Little Switzerland, a favored spot for both technical climbing adventures and enjoyable day trips. This specific section of the Alaska Range is marked by steep, rocky peaks reminiscent of the European Alps. Consequently, many seasoned climbing teams visit this area for the sheer technical climbing challenge it presents. The flight provides breathtaking views of Little Switzerland as we approach the grand Kahiltna Glacier gorge. Next, you ascend over the Kahiltna Glacier as it meanders toward Denali. The Kahiltna is enormous, easily recognized as the largest glacier in the Alaska Range. Just before reaching the head, a small branch veers off to the east, which includes the landing area that Don Sheldon established as the entry point for climbing expeditions. This is where climbers start and finish their journey up Denali -- Base Camp. Weather permitting (and at pilot's discretion) land on the Ruth Glacier. Stepping out on a glacier, gives us the unmeasurable experience to put everything into perspective and experience the vastness of those rock and ice mountains. The journey proceeds through a pass that ultimately leads to the Don Sheldon Amphitheater, perched atop the Ruth Glacier. You will see sight of Mooses Tooth, Bear Tooth, and Broken Tooth peaks, which are well-known climbing spots located on the opposite side of the Amphitheater. During the Denali climbing season from May to June, Sheldon pilots transport and retrieve climbing teams to the base camp, regardless of the weather conditions. As illustrated in the video at the top of the page, even when Talkeetna is shrouded in clouds, breathtaking views can be enjoyed once airborne. To conclude your Alaskan flightseeing adventure, you will witness the stunning Ruth Gorge on your return to Talkeetna. Also known as the Great Gorge, it reaches depths of a mile in certain areas. The base is formed by the rugged Ruth Glacier, where you can spot the striking pools of vivid blue glacier meltwater. On your return journey, the Tokositna River region at the foot of the Alaska Range provides another chance to observe moose and bears in their natural environment. Deposits required

Denali Glacier Landing Tour trip plans: Land on Ruth Glacier

A Denali glacier landing is the ultimate Alaska flightseeing experience. After an aerial tour over Mount Denali and the Ruth Glacier, your aircraft descends and lands directly on thousands of feet of ancient ice. You step out onto the glacier, feel the cold air, walk across pristine ice, and stand surrounded by 4,000-foot canyon walls and snow-covered peaks.

The Ruth Glacier Experience

Ruth Glacier is one of Alaska's most spectacular glaciers. It flows through the Don Sheldon Amphitheater, a massive natural cirque with walls rising dramatically on all sides. From the air, the glacier appears as a vast river of ice; when you land and step out, you grasp its true scale.

The glacier's surface is shaped by crevasses, ice formations, and dramatic color shifts—from deep blue to brilliant white. The air is crystalline cold. Silence is profound. Peaks surround you in every direction.

A glacier landing typically includes:

  • 45–70 minute scenic flight over Denali, Ruth Gorge, and surrounding peaks
  • 20–30 minutes on the glacier for walking, photography, and storytelling
  • Professional pilot guidance about glacial geology and climate
  • Equipment: All protective gear provided by the flight team

What Happens During a Glacier Landing

Pre-Flight: At Talkeetna airport, staff conduct a safety briefing. You learn how aircraft behave during landing, what to do during takeoff and descent, and how to safely disembark and walk on the glacier.

Takeoff and Initial Climb: The aircraft accelerates down the runway, banks north, and climbs toward the Alaska Range. Within minutes, Denali appears on the horizon.

The Scenic Portion: Your pilot points out landmarks: Mount Denali's north face, Ruth Gorge, Kahiltna Glacier in the distance. You see the Susitna River valley below, the smaller peaks surrounding the Range, and the immense scale of the landscape.

Approach and Landing: As you descend toward Ruth Glacier, the glacier fills your view. The plane descends smoothly, slowing to near-hover speed. The pilot lands gently on the glacier's surface—much smoother than landing on a runway.

On the Glacier: The aircraft door opens. Cold air rushes in. You step out onto the glacier, your boots crunching on compacted snow and ice. The silence is immediate and absolute. Photos appear larger than life when you're surrounded by these mountains.

Your pilot shares observations: the glacier's age, the patterns of ice flow, climate impacts you can see in the ice record. You might walk 100–300 feet across the glacier (depending on surface conditions), then return to the aircraft.

Return Flight: The aircraft climbs again, now with new perspectives on familiar peaks. The return to Talkeetna takes about 45 minutes, giving you time to photograph and absorb the experience.

Physical Requirements

Glacier landings are accessible to most people, but require:

  • Ability to walk on uneven, slippery ice for 20–30 minutes
  • Comfort with small aircraft and altitude (10,000–12,000 feet)
  • No severe altitude sickness or medical conditions that contraindicate flying
  • Willingness to follow safety instructions exactly

Pregnancies, recent surgeries, severe cardiac conditions, or other health concerns should be discussed with the flight team before booking. Children as young as 3–4 can participate (check individual flight teams requirements).

What to Wear and Bring

Clothing:

  • Thermal base layer (merino wool or synthetic; never cotton)
  • Insulating mid-layer (fleece or down jacket)
  • Windproof outer jacket
  • Insulated gloves
  • Warm hat
  • Heavy socks and insulated boots
  • Sunglasses (glacier reflection is intense)

In Your Daypack:

  • Water bottle (you'll dehydrate quickly at altitude)
  • High-energy snacks
  • Camera with extra batteries (cold reduces battery life)
  • Sunscreen
  • Lip balm with SPF
  • Medications you use regularly

flight teams provide all specialized gear: extra jackets, gloves, and emergency equipment.

Safety Considerations

Ruth Glacier landing flights are conducted by experienced bush pilots with thousands of hours in Alaska terrain. All aircraft are FAA-certified and maintained to federal standards. Before landing on a glacier, pilots assess:

  • Ice surface conditions
  • Weather stability
  • Visibility and cloud ceiling
  • Crevasse fields and hidden hazards
  • Aircraft weight and fuel

If conditions are marginal, the pilot will conduct a scenic flight without landing—safer for everyone. Flexibility with scheduling (flying on multiple days) increases the chance of optimal landing conditions.

Seasonal Timing

Best season: June–August. Long daylight hours, stable weather patterns, and consistent snow conditions make these months ideal.

Shoulder seasons (May, September): Fewer crowds, often exceptional lighting and visibility, but shorter daylight and more variable weather.

Winter: Ice becomes harder and more reliable, but weather windows are brief and temperatures severe.

Book as early as possible, check weather forecasts, and be flexible with dates. Your pilot will make the final call on whether conditions allow a glacier landing.

The Lasting Impact

Glacier landing flights create moments that stay with you. The silence on the glacier, the 360-degree views of peaks, the realization of standing on ice thousands of years old—these are visceral, profound experiences.

Many visitors report that a glacier landing flight fundamentally shifts their sense of scale and perspective. The Alaska Range's majesty becomes personal, not just photographic.

Book Your Glacier Landing Tour

From $435–$850+ per person depending on flight duration, glacier landing tours are accessible to visitors of varying budgets. Each flight includes professional piloting, pre- and post-flight briefings, all safety equipment, and the expertise of pilots who've spent careers exploring the Denali region.

Check the trip details, confirm what's included, and book early. Your glacier landing awaits.
